Can you change your car lease mileage?

If you find your real annual mileage is significantly different to those anticipated when you chose your lease terms, changing your mileage limit could prove beneficial.

You may want to add mileage to a car lease in order to avoid an excess mileage charge, or reduce mileage to potentially lower your monthly payment.

Your options will depend on your funder and it's important to bear in mind that mileage amendments may not be an option available to you.

To request to change your mileage during your term, you'll need to reach out to your funder directly. Each follow their own, varying terms but will be happy to review your request.

Before you start, there are some important considerations.

Restrictions are likely to apply based on your time in contract. You will usually have to be at least 12 months into your term and have more than six months remaining until you hand the car back.

Mileage changes are also not unlimited and, if possible at all, funders will likely only allow for a single mileage review during a lease term. So it's important to ensure the revision is valid for the rest of your term as you won't get a second shot.

If a mileage change is permitted, you will be issued a new quotation and contracts that will need to be signed and returned.

While mileage is linked to the residual value of the car and therefore your monthly payment, it is also possible that there was a discount applied on the mileage you chose at the outset of your agreement. Therefore, please note that reducing your mileage may not always prove to reduce your monthly payment.

Any requests are handled at the funder's discretion and restrictions may apply. An adminstration fee may also apply.

Carparison are not informed by the funder of mid-term updates to your contract. You can let us know following a successful mileage change application - we'll then update our records so this reflects in your online customer account. This is not compulsory and does not impact the validity of your new agreement with the funder.
