The best-rated UK service stations, based on the most recent Which? survey of motorists, are Gloucester Services on the M5 and Tebay Services on the M6, both run by the Westmorland Family group.

They score highest for facilities, food, and outside space, with Gloucester reaching 85% customer satisfaction and Tebay close behind at 77%.

Rugby (M6), Cairn Lodge (M74) and Leeds Skelton Lake (M1) round out the top five.

A good motorway service station can make or break a long journey

Some are worth planning your route around.

We’ve pulled together the highest and lowest rated service stations in the UK using the latest Which? survey of motorists. Plus, we take a closer look at the M6 – the motorway attracting the most searches for good services.

The 10 best-rated UK service stations

Rated by Which? on facilities, cleanliness, food and drink, and outside space:

1. Gloucester Services (M5) – 85% customer satisfaction: A farm shop, a proper sit-down restaurant, and 24 ultra-rapid electric car (EV) chargers
2. Tebay Services (M6) – 77%: Sister site to Gloucester, with a farm shop, dog-walking area, and overnight caravan parking
3. Rugby (M6) – 75%: The highest rated stop on the M6 itself
4. Cairn Lodge (M74) – 72%: Scotland’s first independent service station (and the first opened by the Westmorland Family Group), with a farm shop on site and a castle on the doorstep
5. Leeds Skelton Lake (M1) – 68%: Strong across the board for cleanliness and facilities, with consistently high marks from motorists
6. Norton Canes (M6 toll) – 59%: A solid, consistent all-rounder for shops, food and facilities
7. Killington Lake (M6) – 58%: Near-identical scores to Norton Canes, with some value-for-money gripes
8. Annandale Water (A74[M]) – 56%: Slightly better on price than most of the mid-table, with steady scores everywhere else
9. Beaconsfield (M40) – 56%: Regularly cited as one of the most attractive service areas in Europe, with a lakeside terrace and IONITY rapid charging
10. Donington (A1) – 55%: Reasonable for shops and food, but let down by tighter outside space than others in the top 10

Which service station is the best for food, family, or a clean toilet?

The overall percentage score hides some useful detail.

Broken down by category, the Which? survey shows:

• Cleanest: Gloucester Services is the only station in the entire survey to score five stars for cleanliness. Nothing else gets close
• Best food and drink: Gloucester and Tebay are the only two stations in the survey rated five stars for food and drink. Whether for a full meal or a quick cake stop, the food is worth the detour
• Best for families and outside space: Gloucester again leads with five stars, with Tebay, Rugby and Leeds Skelton Lake close behind on four
• Most convenient and accessible: Gloucester, Rugby, and Leeds Skelton Lake all score five stars
• Best value for money: Nowhere. Not one station in the entire top 10 scores above three stars for price, and most drop to one or two. It’s the price we pay for the fun of the service stop

Best motorway service stations on the M6

The M6 sees more searches for a decent service station than any other motorway, and it’s easy to see why.

It’s one of the longest and busiest routes in the country, running from the West Midlands up to the Scottish border, so where you stop matters.

Gloucester Services (M5)

Hands up who has deliberately lengthened their journey just to make sure they drive past Gloucester Services?

Also known – at least to us – as ‘posh services’ for its grass-roofed building and farm shop, Gloucester is as much a destination as a pitstop.

The sausage rolls and cakes are worth the stop alone.

Beaconsfield (M40)

Ask people to name their favourite service stations, and Beaconsfield will – more often than not – rank in the top three.

A lakeside terrace and landscaped grounds make this one of the more scenic options on the network, with IONITY rapid charging if you’re driving electric.

Not bad for somewhere you only stopped at for a coffee and to stretch your legs.

Fleet (M3)

If your route runs anywhere near LEGOLAND Windsor, Chessington, or Heathrow, there’s a good chance Fleet has already saved your sanity once without you noticing.

A footbridge connects both sides of the services, the woodland setting lets you breathe in some nature after an endless stretch of tarmac, and there’s a free-to-play piano inside if anyone in the car fancies their chances.

Cairn Lodge (M74)

Cairn Lodge is the only service station in the UK with a castle in its back garden, which is reason enough on its own to add a detour.

As the northernmost of the Westmorland Family sites, it’s worth the stop if you’re heading into Scotland.

After all, not every pitstop comes with a farm shop and its own historic ruin.

EV charging at service stations

If you’re driving an electric car or plug-in hybrid, charger availability is often the deciding factor in where you stop – not the availability of good coffee.
