At 4.9 metres long, the ID.7 Tourer is one long beast.

But it's not like many EVs you'll see now that shove their electric credentials in your face.

It has a smooth, streamlined face, and the silver D-pillar disguises the typical boxy estate rear.

The Stonewashed Blue Metallic paint gives it a sophisticated, understated presence.

Space for days, tech to match

Step inside and there's room and tech galore. This German stalwart is stepping it up.

A 15-inch infotainment screen dominates the dash, and the lack of buttons means that most controls are done through the screen – which isn't ideal but is still easy to use.

There's a heads-up display instead of a driver's display, which makes the dash look uncluttered and minimalistic.

Smooth, refined, and easy to place

Put your foot down and the ID.7 Tourer is smooth and powerful.

Visibility is good, and you have a camera to help you in tight parking manoeuvres – which is a godsend for a car of this size.

You get plenty of driver assistance as standard: Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Cross Traffic Assist and Side Assist.

But the lane keeping assist can be a tad intrusive, though it's easily corrected.

With up to 420 miles of range (WLTP Comb), the ID.7 Tourer is built to go the distance.

In real-world driving, you can expect around 320-344 miles, dropping a bit lower in winter. But the heat pump helps with this, coming as standard across the range.

AC 11kW charging will fully charge your car in around 9 hours. Switch it up to DC charging and you can go 10-80% in around 28 minutes. Impressive stuff.

Space is the standout, though.

With a boot that swallows anything family life throws at it and rear passenger room to match, this is a car built with practicality in mind.

Layer on genuinely useful tech (that heads-up display in particular) and a range long enough to cover most journeys without a second thought, and it's easy to see the appeal.

It's not without its niggles.

The touchscreen-heavy control setup takes some getting used to, and the lane keeping assist can feel a bit eager at times. But neither is a dealbreaker, and both are things you'll adjust to quickly.

For families who want space, tech and genuine electric range in one estate-shaped package, the ID.7 Tourer makes a strong case for itself.
