Is this the right EV charger for me?

Finding the right EV home charger doesn’t have to be difficult.

Providing you have off-street parking available at your property, there are only a few further considerations, which can all be identified during your initial questionnaire.

If you live in either a flat or an apartment, it is unlikely to be a viable option as you may not own the wall that the charger would need to be mounted on.

If your property has a three-phase electricity supply, your property will not be eligible for the Hive EV charger. The engineers will confirm with you during the Home Check process whether your property has a single phase or three-phase electricity supply if you are unsure.

Houses built prior to 2008 are suitable but may require additional work to be carried out before the charger can be installed. This is due to a change in electric standards in 2008.

Hive EV Charging FAQs

What is the difference between a tethered or untethered unit?
Tethered chargers come with a fixed cable in the charger that cannot be removed. Untethered chargers have a Type 1 or Type 2 socket which you can plug your charging cable directly into. You can then unplug your charging cable from the charger when you’ve finished your charging session.
I don’t own my home, can I have a charger?
Leasehold and those who rent their home will need to seek permission from the freeholder or landlord respectively before having a charger installed at their home.
Can I cancel my home chargepoint order?
You can cancel your agreement with us at any time before the installation is fully completed. This is called your “cooling off” period.
What happens on the day of my install?
British Gas will agree on a date and time with you for your installation and confirm this by email. On the day of your installation, a British Gas engineer will call ahead to let you know they’re on the way. You’ll need to make sure someone over 18 is available to meet the engineer, answer any questions and stay with them throughout the appointment. The engineer may need to switch off your electricity supply to install your charger. So, it's a good idea to switch off any appliances or electronic equipment that may be affected. If the engineer finds anything that needs further investigation during your appointment, they'll let you know what needs to happen next before we continue with your installation. They’ll also discuss your energy usage and habits with you. Make sure there's clear access to the area where the charger will be installed such as unlocking a locked gate or cupboard. You should also ensure young children and pets are kept safely out of the way. Any additional work that has been completed by a third party, will need to be checked before your charger is installed. Finally, if you don’t already have the Hive app, it’s advised you download it before the installation day as the engineer will talk you through pairing it up to the charger.
Who should I contact if I have a question about my install?
If you have questions regarding your install, you can call the British Gas EV Support Team on 0333 202 1054, Monday – Friday 9am to 5pm.
