The humble estate makes for a fantastic family car. Spacious, practical, and good-looking, it ticks all the boxes.

We won’t ask any questions about what you need to put in your boot, we just want you to have enough room for it.

But with so much choice on the market, which estate fares the best when it comes to the size of its boot?

Luckily for you, we've taken the hard work out of making the right choice and pitted together some of our favourite estates with big boots, comparing size and practicality.

With options that range from affordable to luxe, and an estate car lease taking all the hassle out of driving a new vehicle, all that's left is to find which lease deal fills your boots.

Which estate cars have the biggest - and best - boots?

1. Volkswagen Golf Estate

  • 611 litres with seats
  • 1642 litres with rear seats down

If you're after huge amounts of space for smaller amounts of money, the Volkswagen Golf Estate is an excellent contender.

With a hefty 611L of boot space (stretching to 1642L with the seats down), you've got more than enough room for a buggy or the weekly shop. You could probably fit a whole month's worth of shopping in if you were prepared to play shopping bag Tetris.

If you fancy taking your VW Golf Estate to visit a golf club it'll even fit two sets of golf clubs in with ease. The only thing you'll have to worry about is which pair of socks to show off as you step out of the VW's spacious interior.

There's plenty of space in the cabin for a growing family, and your tall friends will fit in the back seats with ease, if you feel like taking them golfing too.

However, they will have to play ‘rock, paper, scissors' to decide which one has to sit in the middle and contend with the raised section at their feet.

But with a 10-inch infotainment system, complete with built-in sat-nav and smartphone integration, you'll be able to keep everyone entertained with in-car karaoke, and no chance of getting lost.

2. SKODA Superb

  • 690 litres with seats
  • 1920 litres with seats down

Our joint second biggest boot of the list (tied with the Volkswagen Passat)—The SKODA Superb.

A car that wouldn't look out of place at NASA's headquarters.

It's a behemoth of a vehicle.

The boot - 690L with the seats up, 1920L with the seats down - needs its own sat-nav for exploring the interior.

Opening the boot is akin to opening the wardrobe door to Narnia.

The cavernous space is one of the best on the market, and the well-built SKODA comes in at an affordable cost, especially if you plump for a monthly lease.

Family life will never be the same again.

Need a new washing machine? Not a problem.

Need a new fridge? Get two.

Need to take your entire extended family on holiday? With space for 11 carry-on suitcases, there'll be no arguments over who gets to take what.

The cabin is finished to a high standard, with a plush mix of materials and clever storage dotted around. SKODA has even made space for an umbrella to live in each front door, so you'll never be caught short in the rain again.

If you need space, space, and - wait for it - more space, you'd be hard pushed to find a better estate for your money than the SKODA Superb.

3. BMW 5 Series Touring

  • 570 litres with seats
  • 1700 litres with rear seats down

If you love the 5 Series Saloon but you've always thought it could do with a smidge more space, then the 5 Series Touring was made for you.

There's no compromise on the feeling of luxury, or even driving quality, but the addition of the 570L boot is a welcome one.

Plenty of space for the family dog - he'll feel like he's luxuriating in the best five-star doggy hotel - or the weekly shop, or even a harp. It can fit 8 carry-on suitcases too, making the holiday Jenga a thing of the past.

We've all been there, seeing who'll knock over the Leaning Tower of Luggage first.

Fold the rear seats down - there's a handy electric release button just inside the tailgate opening, and the seats fold in a 40/20/40 split - and you're treated to a respectable 1700L of space.

The seats fold nice and flush too, so you've got a long, flat space to play with. A trip to B&Q will be a breeze, and bulky items will fit nicely in through the wide opening.

BMW has added some handy features - like the ability to access the boot by popping open the rear window. Handy, if you find yourself a little too close to a wall with bags in hand.

With plenty of room for five adults in the cabin, plus all their odds and ends thanks to a generous helping of interior storage, the BMW 5 Series Touring ticks all the boxes when it comes to copious amounts of space with copious amounts of premium quality.

4. Volksagen Passat Estate

  • 690 litres with seats
  • 1920 litres with rear seats down

Our joint second place holder for biggest boot on this list - with more space than ever, the Volkswagen Passat Estate is a compelling option for your next lease

With 690 litres of boot space to play with and 1,920 with the seats down, there’s nothing better than packing the car up for your family holiday and not needing to worry about whether your suitcases, backpacks and gear will all fit in.

Or if you’ve got more belongings than you do people, this estate’s rear seats can split in a 40/20/40 configuration, so you can drop all the seats, or you also have the flexibility to pop one seat down and still carry a longer load with people sat beside it.

Plus, there will be no clashing your elbows with the person sat next to you. Both the front and rear are generous with head and leg room, meaning you can stretch out as much as you like.

And what’s more, the Volkswagen Passat is not a bad place to spend time in either. It’s well equipped, crammed with an array of technology and safety features to make every drive entertaining and easy.

5. SKODA Octavia

  • 640 litres with seats
  • 1700 litres with rear seats down

You can relax knowing there’s enough space for everyone and everything in the SKODA Octavia Estate.

The boot has 640 litres of space to play with, but if you want more than that, capacity increases to 1,700 litres if you put the seats down. The boot also comes with bag hooks and some side compartments, preventing that mysterious clanging that comes from your boot on a roundabout.

Storage is excellent around the cabin with big door bins, space under the arm rest and a decent sized glove box that is cooled by air-con – perfect for your mid-journey snack stash that you want to keep fresh.

Spacious both upfront and in the back, with lots of little nooks and crannies designed for any kind of storage. There’s even a smartphone pocket for keeping your passengers’ phones safe and sound.

It’s also packed with a generous amount of equipment as standard, allowing you to travel in absolute comfort and style. But if you’d like something a little extra (who doesn’t?) like parking sensors or a rear-view camera, you’ll need to opt for one of the higher trim levels.

6. Peugeot 308 SW

  • 608 litres with seats
  • 1634 litres with rear seats down

If you're after an estate car with not only a big boot, but impressive performance too, then the Peugeot 308 SW deserves a place on your wish list.

There are petrol, diesel, hybrid, and pure electric powertrains to choose from in the Peugeot 308 SW family.

Boot volume can reach up to 1,634 litres when you have the seats down. But depending on which engine you go for, the hybrid reduces to 548 litres which is still ideal for a family car.

There’s also lots of room for your passengers, and who doesn’t love extra leg room?

In terms of performance, you can enjoy instant acceleration, and the throttle is light and responsive which makes it feel rather punchy, perfect for a speedy overtake.

You can also opt for a boot mat or tray from Peugeot’s accessories range if you’d like to keep the boot clean – perfect for storing your muddy wellies and wet dog after a long walk.

7. Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer

  • 605 litres with seats
  • 1948 litres with rear seats down

An electric car with copious amounts of storage? You’ve got our attention.

Look no further than the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer.

The Tourer is offered in the Pro, Pro S and GTX, similar to the VW ID.7 Hatchback.

It’s not the biggest electric estate car, but it’s a favourite among families due to its well- balanced interior space and storage capabilities.

With the rear seats down, a whopping 1,948-litre boot capacity is enough for any excursion. With the seats being up, it still offers a generous 605 litres of boot space — enough to fit three medium-to-small-sized dogs comfortably.

We can’t even begin to imagine how many cats would fit comfortably in the back of the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer.

Definitely a road trip car — with massage seats as standard, a smart-glass panoramic sunroof, and Climatronic settings for the seats. And that just scratches the surface (or massages) of the perks in this estate car.

8. Ford Focus Estate

  • 575 litres with seats
  • 1650 litres with rear seats down

Whether you’re off on a long road trip or tootling downtown, you can have complete faith in the Ford Focus Estate.

One of the best estate cars around, the Ford Focus Estate has enough space for even your 6ft 5” friends.

With plenty of head and leg room both in the front and in the back – the wide cabin allows all passengers to stretch out and make themselves at home, there’s more than enough room after all.

There’s a little less headroom if you opt for a panoramic sunroof, something to bear in mind if you’d like a sky view.

The boot offers 575 litres of carrying capacity which isn’t class-leading by any means, but it’s enough to fit in few large suitcases.

A buggy?

Your golf clubs?

Or a decently sized shopping trip to a cash and carry – Makro trip anyone?

If you’d like more space, you can lay the rear seats completely flat for 1650 litres and split them in a 60:40 configuration for flexibility. There are also a few storage options sprinkled around the cabin, including door bins, drink holders and trays.

For practicality, the boot floor can be separated into two to prevent your belongings from moving about when driving.

9. Audi A6 Avant

  • 565 litres with seats
  • 1680 litres with the seats down

If you’re after style, comfort and performance, the Audi A6 Avant is a serious contender, and its big boot isn’t so bad either.

It can comfortably fit five people, though the middle rear-seat passenger loses out on foot space due to a bulky floor hump – designated short friend seat.

It can muster 565 litres of carrying capacity, increasing to 1680 litres with the seats down.

The boot has buttons just inside the tailgate which allow you to fold down the rear seats without having to do it manually – a real time saver.

The seats can also fold in a 40:20:40 configuration, for a bit of flexibility.

It comes with some practical features too, there are four lashing points and rails so you can secure them where you want them. Plus, there’s a strap, a net and a couple of hooks to keep things from sliding around when you’re driving.

If you like extra levels of comfort, the Audi A6 Avant comes with an electric tailgate and luggage cover, a deluxe, two zone electronic climate control and heated front seats with memory function for the driver – you won’t want to get out this car.

10. Toyota Corolla Touring Sport

  • 596 litres with seats
  • 1606 litres with the seat down

You can never have too much space, and the versatile Toyota Corolla Touring Sport has a very spacious interior and flexible loading bay.

The cabin has enough space for all your passengers to sit comfortably and there isn’t a huge hump down the middle of the cabin, meaning the middle rear-seat passenger has enough room to place their feet in front of them.

Depending on the engine you opt for, you can have 596 litres of boot capacity in the 1.8 litre engine model, this lowers to 581 litres if you opt for the 2.0 litre engine.

Toyota haven’t revealed the maximum boot capacity with the seats down but, the second row of seats can drop in a 60:40 split, so not as much flexibility as some of the other options on this list. But it should still be able to accommodate your needs.

In terms of storage, there are door bins that you can store your clobber in, a large glovebox, a few cubbies and cup holders around the cabin too.

Not just a practical family estate car, it looks decent too. The newly designed front grille, alloy wheels, LED headlights and rear combi lights give the Corolla Touring Sport a confident presence on the road.

It also has a pretty decent fuel economy – capable of 64.1 mpg – so you’ll not only travel in style, but you’ll save a few pennies along the way too.
