Carparison: putting customers in the driving seat

Devon-based firm Carparison has launched a recruitment drive, following a rebranding which has seen it become a national player in the growing car leasing and contract hire market.

Carparison, based at Clyst St Mary near Exeter, is looking to take on new staff following a successful national campaign - talkSPORT listeners might have heard their catchy advert, based on the Glenn Frey song, The Heat Is On.

The company was established in 2012, offering customers leasing deals from a singular premium car manufacturer. This year, it has grown to offer this UK-wide service across all brands of new cars and vans. It is the only established business of its kind in the South West.

For customers, it means they can visit the Carparison website and choose their preferred make and model, monthly payment budget, length of lease and annual mileage up to 40,000 miles. Or they can contact the team direct to find the cheapest deals available.

Once the customer finds their desired model and submits their finance application, the company matches them with the best funding package and best car deal using its database of UK dealerships: “It’s putting the customer completely in the driving seat,” said Matt Woodward, General Sales Manager.

“Some people are very specific with what they want. They’ll have an exact car in mind, engine size, trim, colour, everything. Others say: ‘Get me the cheapest offer on a new car’. Our leasing consultancy team is here throughout the process so if a customer would rather speak to us direct and do it all on the phone, that’s absolutely fine.”

“Choosing to get a new car this way is making more aspirational cars accessible for everyone. You just need a down payment that covers you for the first month followed by the monthly fee. You can be driving a new car for as little as £150 per month, with no deposit, and you know exactly what you’ll be paying each month, for the duration of the agreement term.”

All the deals are available with servicing packages and most include car tax for the full term, on top of the manufacturer’s warranty: “It’s hassle-free motoring,” said Matt. “The only thing customers have to sort out themselves is their insurance. Everything else is taken care of. The car will even be delivered directly to their door.”

The big difference in getting a car this way, of course, is that customers never get to buy it. But, says Matt, not owning a car is actually an advantage to a growing number of motorists: “Most customers who lease do so over a period of two or three years, when they get to choose a brand new car again - much like we do with our mobile phones. And it removes the worry of having to sell your car or trade it in at a knock-down price.”

The growth in ordering cars online reflects the way customers are increasingly choosing to shop - a trend, say Carparison, that is set to continue: “It’s all about convenience,” said Matt. “The customer can be sitting on their sofa at home, and it’s all at their fingertips. They’ve got someone else finding the best deals for them, across all makes and models.”

So, how does that work then? Sales Manager Andy Tomlinson explained: “It’s the funder offers which drive the price down in the first instance because they are able to purchase cars in large quantities, bargaining for discounts from the manufacturers as a result. We also get great deals from our hard-earned dealer contacts throughout the UK, who also benefit from the cheaper cost of selling a car online as opposed to a showroom. These savings are passed to our customers.”

Carparison is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and follows its six principles for treating customers fairly. The company also recognises the fair wear and tear guide for returning vehicles which is dictated across the industry. And it has a high rating on the independent customer review site, Feefo.

“This is a relatively new way of getting a car, so confidence is very important for customers,” acknowledged Andy. “We’re an established firm in the South West and our sole purpose is to get the best possible deals on behalf of our customers. That’s what we’re here for; to make driving an aspirational car affordable for people.”

We spoke to one of Carparison’s happy customers, who is kept anonymous. He ordered his new car on a Wednesday and it arrived on the following Monday: “They were brilliant,” he said. “I needed a new car very quickly, so I looked on their website initially and then did everything over the phone and via email.

“I gave them my monthly price range and they looked at four or five different cars for me and came up with the best deal. They talked me through all the options very clearly. It was much better than looking at various dealers and various models.

“I’ve had the car for five or six weeks and I’m really happy with it. When the four-year term ends, I’ll be going back to Carparison to get another new car.”
