First impressions: The ultimate hybrid of style and smarts

With its sleek silhouette and high-end AMG styling, the C-Class looks every inch the executive saloon.

But it’s the clever stuff beneath the bonnet (and behind the screens) that makes it stand out.

You’re getting Mercedes’ mild hybrid technology, meaning better fuel economy and lower emissions without plugging in – unless you opt for the plug-in hybrid version, which charges to 80% in around 20 minutes at a DC station.

And with just a 6% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rate, it’s a no-brainer for company car drivers looking to blend luxury with low tax liability.

My Mercedes

My Mercedes

'My Mercedes' – Your personal automotive assistant

First things first, the C-Class comes with 'My Mercedes' – an AI assistant that's so eager to help, it might interrupt your singing to see if you need anything.

We found ourselves having full conversations with the car, asking it to adjust the temperature ("I'm cold"), sort out the sunroof, and even demonstrate what noise a dog makes (yes, really – it randomly suggested this mid-conversation).

The system understands different accents and learns your preferences over time. You can set up to seven different driver profiles, so everyone gets their personalised experience – from driving modes to radio stations.

Sometimes it's a bit too keen to help (like interrupting your carpool karaoke sessions), but when it works, it's genuinely impressive. Plus, there's something quite satisfying about telling your car what to do and it actually listening.

Sunroof

Sunroof

The sunroof can be a bit temperamental, but a quick "My Mercedes, open the sunroof" usually sorts it out.

Digital Light headlamps – Like having daylight on tap

Driving at night? The Digital Light system is basically your car doing special effects.

Each headlamp contains over one million pixels, reacting to road conditions in real time.

It can:

  • Project lane arrows on the tarmac
  • Flash up a collision warning symbol if you’re too close to another car
  • Reach up to 650 metres with its ULTRA RANGE Highbeam

And yes, there’s a mini light show every time you start or stop the engine. Just because it can.

Smooth operator – A driving experience that spoils you

On the road, the C-Class is a dream to drive. The ride is smooth, the steering responsive, and the mild hybrid system works seamlessly in the background.

The 0-62 mph sprint in 5.7 seconds feels effortless, while the 640-mile WLTP Comb range means you won't be seeing much of petrol stations. Plus, with up to 69 miles of all-electric WLTP Comb range, your daily commute could be completely emissions-free.

Adaptive cruise control and speed limit assistance takes the stress out of motorway driving, while lane assist keeps you safely between the lines. It'll even tell you when you're too close to the car in front.

The stop-start system saves fuel without you noticing, and the plug-in hybrid system gives you the best of both worlds – electric driving for short trips and petrol power for longer journeys.

There is also a plug-in hybrid version, where charging takes approximately 20 minutes at DC charging stations (10-80%), so top-ups are quick and convenient.

One thing to note: after driving the C-Class, getting back into a car with heavier steering feels like a workout. Mercedes has spoiled us.

Navigation system

Navigation system

Tech that actually makes sense

Unlike some cars that throw technology at you for the sake of it, the C-Class strikes the perfect balance between buttons and modern tech.

The 360-degree camera makes parking effortless, while the fingerprint sensor adds both security and convenience. Rather than entering a four-digit PIN, you can simply use your fingerprint to access protected MBUX functions and personal services

Touch control buttons feel intuitive, and the MBUX multimedia system displays charging stations clearly.

Mercedes' Digital Extras let you check oil level, tyre pressure, and fuel from your phone.

Forgot to lock your car? Sort it from your phone.

Need to find your parked car? Just check your phone again.

The acoustic ambient protection is a clever touch – the tone pitch changes depending on driving conditions, so you can differentiate between braking and accelerating through sound alone.

Space and practicality – Not quite family-friendly

Here's where the C-Class shows its priorities. It's built for comfort in the front, but the back seats are a different story.

While you can fit a car seat (with ISOFIX), it doesn't leave much legroom in the front seats. The 315L boot is reasonable for a saloon, but if you need more cargo space, the estate version offers 360L with seats up, or a generous 1,375L with the rear seats folded down.

It's more of a sophisticated couple's car than a family hauler – and there's nothing wrong with that.

Peace of mind comes standard

Every Mercedes-Benz C-Class comes with a three-year unlimited mileage warranty

Extended warranty options are available after the initial period, and ServiceCare plans can lock in maintenance costs for up to four services.

It's the kind of comprehensive cover that lets you enjoy your premium saloon without worrying about unexpected bills.

Any downsides?

The C-Class isn't perfect. The over-eager AI assistant can be more chatty than helpful at times, and the rear seats aren't the most spacious.

For long journeys with passengers, comfort might be compromised. And while the tech is impressive, there's definitely a learning curve to get the most out of it.

Final verdict

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class delivers everything you'd expect from a premium German saloon – and then some.

It delivers that ‘just got upgraded to first class’ feeling every time you drive.

It's sophisticated, packed with intelligent technology, and offers a driving experience that genuinely spoils you. The mild hybrid system provides excellent efficiency, giving you more miles for your money.

Sure, it's not the most family-friendly option, and the AI can be a bit overzealous, but these are small prices to pay for the luxury and innovation on offer.

If you want a premium saloon that makes every journey feel special, the C-Class might just be the perfect lease for you.

We don't have any deals on them right now, but they're worth keeping an eye out for.
