Right now, Chery operates under four different badges on the UK market (though more could follow like Exceed, Jetour and iCaur, which all operate in homeland China).

Or rather, Chery International – the global arm of Chery Automobile Co.Ltd.

It might still feel like a new name, but this Chinese powerhouse has spent two decades building a reputation that could (almost) overshadow the Great Wall.

Launched in 2022, OMODA was always intended for the European market; it was one of Chery’s first brands to hit the UK. And while it might be a newer name, it’s still backed by Chery’s decades of manufacturing experience.

So what sets it apart?

Think futuristic, sporty design language, surprisingly affordable price-tags, and cars made for families living in an urban environment.

That distinctive grille on the flagship 9 played a big part in turning heads. Far from the generic appearance of some SUVs, it has a nose that’s unmistakable, even from a distance.

But OMODA is about so much more than just fierce exterior design – and we should know; we’ve test driven every model in the current lineup.

JAECOO or JAECOOL? That’s the question we’ve been asking since the flagship 7 arrived at Carparison HQ early last year – and our team fell in love before we even started the test drive.

The brand name is a portmanteau of ‘jaeger’ – which means hunter in German – and ‘cool’, and judging by the impressive sales records to date, JAECOO is living up to its name.

The 7 became the UK’s best-selling car in March 2026, with over 10,000 units registered that month alone. Not bad for a car that’s been on our roads for less than two full years.

The brand’s inspiration comes from ancient hunting scenes; intense focus, unity with nature, and dogged determination. In other words, it’s made for families who have an active and adventurous lifestyle and want a premium-feeling off-roader to match.

But how does this concept translate into curb (pun-intended) appeal?

Let’s start with the obvious; the bold styling includes some seriously familiar design cues that scream luxury off-roader…but at a fraction of the cost you’d expect given what’s included.

Think light and airy cabins (the panoramic sunroof on the 7 is class-leading), a seriously generous equipment list, and the sort of refinement you’d expect to find on a much more expensive rival.

The 7 is still JAECOO’s most successful model to date, but it’s been joined by two other vehicles, one of which we’ve already had the pleasure of taking out on the road:

• ·JAECOO 5/E5 – Same refined styling on a smaller, compact scale
• JAECOO 8 – The seven-seater hybrid, done in serious style

The 8 is at the more expensive end of the spectrum, with monthly payments starting from around £440 a month*.

But when you consider the exceptional build quality, full range of Driver Assistance systems, and sheer amount of tech included, even the most expensive 8 trim is better value for money than its closest rivals.

LEPAS

Perfect if: You want a style-led, spacious plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that feels decidedly upmarket, but manages to undercut more established rivals on price.

What do you get when you take a leopard and passion, and smush them together? You get the lightning strike of inspiration that created LEPAS.

Chery’s newest brand is all about speed, power and a big helping of global ambition. And it’s literally just landed in the UK, with first orders coming in from September 2026.

The flagship model? The LEPAS L8.

It’s the first (and right now, only) model in the LEPAS lineup, which will push “elegant, electrified driving”. There’ll be no petrol powertrains here. LEPAS is exclusively looking at lower and zero emission driving: Hybrid, PHEV, or pure electric engines for an upmarket audience.

Following the L8, LEPAS is due to launch two more models in the UK: The mid-sized L6, which will be an all-electric SUV, and the smaller L4 SUV.

And if you ask us, Chery’s hoping all three cars will replicate JAECOOs enormous success.

So what do we know about the LEPAS L8?

For starters, it’s an SUV.

A big chunk of an SUV, too – which isn’t the obvious direction you’d expect from a badge inspired by the power and precision of a big predator cat, but it makes sense for the modern family.

You’ll find nods to the ‘Leopard Aesthetic’ in the angular LED headlights, vehicle proportions, and lines and detailing on the body. And overall, those nods make it a generally good-looking family car – if not as distinctive as offerings from OMODA and JAECOO.

But the bespoke hybrid platform it’s built on? Genuinely exciting. And it’s underpinned by a suite of clever driver assistance systems designed to deliver that promised elegant drive.

Pure electric range comes in about 56 miles (WLTP Comb). And CO2 emissions are listed as 21g/km – which means you can drive free of charge through London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) without committing to an EV before you’re ready.

Though, you can expect to see a purely electric L8 hit the UK market sometime in 2027.

With prices starting from under £40,000, it’s a seriously good contender for anyone who wants a premium hybrid that feels just as well-thought out as an EV.
